Sikkim Hits 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake - 26 Dead, 100 Injured @ Sikkim Earthquake | Sikkim Earthquake Photos

Northeast India suffered a severe earthquake earlier in the day - 18 September, 2011 at 12:40:48 UTC - measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale. At least 25 people have died and over 100 injured after a 6.8 earthquake hit Sikkim Sunday night. The authorities fear that the toll could rise further. The exact extent of the damage is not yet considered the relief and rescue has yet to reach the affected areas.

Nepal and northeastern Indian have been rocked by a long and strong earthquake that's killed at least 25 people. Three people died when a wall collapsed at the British embassy compound in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.Of the 25 dead, 16 from Sikkim, two from Bihar and five in West Bengal. Thurs Army personnel were also reported to have been killed in earthquake in northern Sikkim.

Army vehicles, including a bus that disappeared are found, and all employees are safe. In all 50 Army Columns have been deployed to assist in relief and rescue operations. More smokehouse has been created to cater to those houses have been damaged.

The Bagdogra air base has been at the center of all operations. The armed forces have deployed teams of relief and rescue activity center also send rescuers. But heavy rain, intermittent power outages and loss of cellular connection prevents rescue.



The earthquake has disrupted Sikkim. The national highway has been closed after heavy rains, followed by landslides, and there are reports of people getting caught. Army units were sent to all the areas that have been hit by the earthquake.



The center has also flowed into teams of National Disaster Response Force. They have been flown in from Delhi and Kolkata to Bagdora where they went way.
