Navratri is a major Hindu festival, celebrated with religious zeal and enthusiasm by Hindus in different parts of the country. 'Nav' means 'nine' and 'Ratri' means 'night'. Thus, 'Navratri' means 'nine nights'. There are many legends associated with the notion of Navratri like all Indian festivals. All of them are related to Goddess Shakti (Hindu Mother Goddess) and her various forms. It is one of the most famous festivals of Hindu calendar, it has particular significance for Gujratis and Bengalis and one can see it in the zeal and fervor of the people as they indulge in festive activities for the season. dandiya and Garbe Rass are the highlights of the festival in Gujarat while farmer sow seeds and thank the goddess for her blessings and pray for better yield. In ancient times it was Navratri associated with the fertility of Mother Earth who feed us as her children.

The first three days of Navratri are dedicated to Goddess Durga (Warrior Goddess) dressed in red and mounted on a lion. Her various incarnations - Kumari, Parvati and Kali - are grown in those days.

Navratri dates in 2011 are approaching. This is one of the most colorful festivals celebrated in India with great enthusiasm and devotion. In the year 2011 navratra start date is 28 September Wednesday. The Hindu festival dedicated to divine mother continues for nine nights, the last date of October 6th and 7th October dussehra or dasara festival on this day we celebrate the victory.
